Does it sound strange to say that I started my journey into health and wellness when I became ill… It was my freshman year of high school. Suddenly I could no longer eat my tried-and-true peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at lunch because it left me in such digestive distress. I recall a feeling of panic that I didn’t know what was wrong. I continued to normalize this feeling over the next 16 years until I had my kids. At that point my entire body constitution changed, and I was able to eat more foods with ease. However, the stress associated with food and eating continued….
During those years, I sought out over 8 medical doctors, a handful of alternative health practitioners, and I even thought that I would attend a prominent health school in Boston to study to be a dietician. Thank goodness the program didn’t promise to solve my digestive issues and I continued to look elsewhere.
I ended up following my intuition and enrolling in a holistic health coaching program instead. I knew that I wanted to find the connection between all these parts of my life, not just the singular component of nutrition. Many times, we can eat all of the “right” foods, and not see that the lack of sleep or the lack of purpose in our daily work is really the stressor causing the root of our health problem.
I found my first health coach when I had 3 kids under the age of 5 years old and I was completely overwhelmed and tired. She changed my outlook on everything, including taking care of myself and how that would help my family. I was so busy taking care of others that I had forgotten myself.
When your doctor tells you to change some part of your life to “get healthier,” I want to support you and be part of your team to achieving your health goals. You rarely get a roadmap once you leave the doctor’s office. Often, you’re left to google additional questions you might have which can lead to confusion, frustration, and you struggling to reach your goals. Where modern medicine doesn’t consider your lifestyle and individual needs, I look at your whole person… your lifestyle, nutrition, spirituality, community, purpose, and relationships. Everything is important.
Wellness starts when you make the commitment to take that first step toward changing your habits that are not working for you.
I have dealt with digestive issues most of my life and understand the struggles of not feeling like “you”.
Your needs will be heard, and you will receive personalized guidance, not some cookie-cutter plan.
I am a great listener. Frequently there are clues I will pick up on, even if they aren’t explicitly stated.
I keep an open mind. As a mother of a blended 5-teen family, it will feel like talking with your bestie.
